BPX Electro Mechanical Co. Ltd has supported MECHATRONICS International Ltd in the development of a modular automation training platform designed to reflect modern, networked manufacturing environments.
Acting as the supply partner, BPX provided Mitsubishi Electric automation technologies used within the system, helping MECHATRONICS International deliver a solution aligned with current industrial practices.
Founded in 1988, MECHATRONICS International Ltd is a UK-based manufacturer of engineering training systems used by colleges, universities and industrial training centres worldwide. Its solutions cover a wide range of disciplines, including fluid power, mechanical transmission, and industrial automation.
The latest Compact Mechatronics System (CMS) is built using industrial-grade components to replicate real-world environments. At its core are Mitsubishi Electric MELSEC iQ-F FX5S PLCs and a GT2107 HMI, supported by the iQ Works2 software suite, all supplied via BPX.
Designed to simulate a small-scale automated production line, the CMS enables students to gain practical experience in PLC programming, communications, diagnostics and production data monitoring.
The system incorporates communication between multiple PLC stations using Ethernet-based simple PLC communication. Moving from the earlier FX3S controllers to the FX5S platform has enabled a more modern, networked control architecture, reflecting current industrial practices.
Seven FX5S PLCs are integrated with an HMI, providing visualisation of system status, fault diagnostics, cycle times and production data. This allows learners to explore how operational data can be captured and used within connected environments.
The modular design of the CMS allows each station to operate independently or as part of a complete production line, offering flexibility for training providers while maintaining a compact footprint.
Barry James, Managing Director at MECHATRONICS International Ltd, commented:
“Building this platform around the FX5S and Ethernet communication has simplified development and reduced complexity, while improving flexibility for both teaching and system design. The modular approach allows colleges to create realistic, networked production environments within a compact and cost-effective setup.”
Stephen Thornton, Regional Account Manager at Mitsubishi Electric Automation Systems Division UK, added:
“Ensuring engineers are trained on technologies that reflect real industry environments is essential. By combining modern PLC networking, visualisation and data monitoring, this platform helps bridge the gap between classroom learning and the factory floor.”
BPX continues to support customers across industry and education by providing access to leading automation technologies and helping deliver solutions that reflect the evolving demands of modern manufacturing.
BPX are proud Innovation Partners of Mitsubishi Electric, and since 1989, the largest independent technical distributor of Mitsubishi Electric automation equipment in the UK. Should you wish to meet with a member of our Application Support Team and a Mitsubishi Electric specialist to discuss your particular project, please don’t hesitate to get in touch, and we’ll be in back in touch at the earliest opportunity.
