Risks when handling hydrogen:
- Leakage – Its small molecular size, low weight, high diffusibility, and low viscosity make it extremely difficult to contain, allowing it to escape easily. Even a small leak can create a significant hazard, as hydrogen is highly flammable and carries a serious risk of fire or explosion. Adding to the challenge, hydrogen flames are nearly invisible, meaning a leak should always be treated as if a flame is present to ensure maximum safety.
- Fire/Ignition – Being extremely flammable and naturally explosive, hydrogen ignites and burns far more easily than conventional fuels. As one of the lightest elements, it disperses rapidly, moving upward and spreading quickly in the event of a leak. Compounding the risk, hydrogen flames are nearly invisible, making it difficult to pinpoint the source of a fire.
- Injury Through Contact – Hydrogen is typically stored and transported in a compressed state within pressurised tanks, making it extremely cold. If released in this state, direct contact with skin or inhalation of its icy vapor can cause serious injuries, including burns, frostbite, hypothermia, and even lung damage. These hazards make proper handling, containment, and safety precautions essential when working with hydrogen in its liquid or gaseous form.
