Mitsubishi Electric has introduced its new high-performance MELSERVO MR-J5 series of TSN-compatible servo drives. The high-speed, high-accuracy series benefits machines with demanding requirements for precision, dynamics and multi-axis synchronisation. This covers a wide range of applications including food and beverage, life sciences and printing/converting production. It also integrates a full suite of safety functions, and its predictive maintenance functions increase machine productivity and availability.
The frequency response of 3.5 kHz and a communication cycle time of 31.25µs enables machine builders to improve machine performance. Moreover, with the associated MELSEC motion module, the MR-J5 can synchronise up to 256 axes per module. The total system can support three motion modules allowing for control of systems of up to 768 axes. The 26-bit absolute encoder offers 67 million pulses per revolution to ensure precise motion control in demanding applications.
MELSERVO MR-J5 Auto-tuning
The drive’s advanced tuning functions allow users to set up complex machines without tuning experience. Initiating auto-tuning with the servo-on command controls vibration and overshoot. Before an operation, the amplifier sets speed loop gain and machine resonance suppression filters by inputting torque to the servo motor.
The drive’s quick-tuning function generates needed gain values within 0.3s and completes servo gain adjustment to reduce the settling time. The servo gain adjustment also includes a machine resonance suppression filter and an advanced vibration suppression control. The machine is ready to run when the servo is enabled, ensuring smooth running with faster commissioning and less effort.
Important for improved performance across multi-axis servo systems is the integration of CC-Link IE TSN. This time-sensitive network technology with 1Gbps transmission speeds assures synchronisation across all connected devices, including safety devices that connect on the same network as standard control products like variable speed drives, HMIs and I/O. Other network protocols such as EtherCAT are also offered as standard.
CC-Link IE TSN supports TCP/IP communications and applies it to industrial architectures through its support of TSN enabling real-time communications. It supports mixing deterministic communications with IT system information data on the same network. It is ideal for building an IIoT infrastructure across the manufacturing enterprise, where using a single network boosts machine performance.
Onboard predictive maintenance functions help reduce unplanned machine downtime by detecting changes in machine vibration and friction. Using Mitsubishi Electric’s Maisart AI technology allows the servos to detect and flag mechanical component deterioration allowing the replacement of parts before they fail. This leads to increased machine capacity and helps avoid downtime, reduce maintenance time, and improve both productivity and product quality.
The MELSERVO MR-J5 series enables users to save time and money in other areas. A new single cable for encoder, power and electromagnetic brake simplifies machine wiring. Also, its new one-touch lock connector eliminates the need for tightening screws. Finally, maintenance costs are lower as the MR-J5 series amplifiers do not need an internal battery.
