Omron S8VK-X: More Power than a Power Supply

A power supply is a power supply, right? No wrong. The Omron S8VK-X is different; it’s about the future. In this blog article, Omron S8VK-X: More Power than a Power Supply, we take a look at Visulaisation of site conditions, predictive maintenance and monitoring software.

There are millions of switching PSUs in operation quietly doing their job and if they fail, you soon know about it as something important stops. All you need to do is find where the problem is. But what about in the factories of the future? What about digitalisation, about lost data, about costly downtime for critical processes?

The production site of the future that OMRON aims to create is one where the health status of its facilities, invisible today, becomes visible. Taking its inspiration from IoT, Omron believes in system conditions being visible, anytime, anywhere, displayed collectively by equipment and by site. Moreover, one where past data is also retrievable.

Visualisation of Site Conditions

The visualisation of site conditions should be made using IoT, and seamlessly connected to other sites, wherever they are in the world. Only in this way can users ensure the systematic maintenance of facility operations. This will also change working practices.

At its heart is a modern style of facility maintenance brought about by the visualisation of key elements. By centrally controlling the condition of power supplies, users can systematise equipment maintenance before problems occur. Thus, eliminating unexpected downtime but also unnecessary premature replacement, and thus reducing the overall maintenance cost.

Until now the condition of equipment has not been readily visible. If something happens, users need to get to their machines and inspect them individually to identify defective equipment. The Omron S8VK-K power supply changes that by offering centralised monitoring of equipment conditions. For example, it displays the voltage, current, and remaining lifetime of power supplies online, on the units, or both. It is compatible with Ethernet/IP and Modbus TCP.

Improved accuracy of maintenance planning

Statistical use of past data enables you to identify the appropriate schedule and method for maintenance. This enhances facility operating rate and optimises maintenance costs. The improved accuracy of maintenance planning prevents unexpected equipment shutdown and achieves maintenance at the most appropriate schedule and cost.

S8VK-X calculates the deterioration of the internal electrolytic capacitor based on its component’s temperature. The indicated value appears on the display as well as via the Ethernet communications. This means users can check the expected output voltage and the designed current (steady-state and maximum) without using measuring equipment.

Power Supply Monitoring Software

By using the free Power Supply Monitoring Tool, it is possible to start monitoring by simply connecting the S8VK-X to a personal computer via an Ethernet cable. In addition to collectively displaying and saving data and displaying graphs, it is also possible to check the status in real time on a derating chart and to simulate capacity changes.

Users can also display and save data and the alarm display. It is possible to collectively monitor up to eighteen power supplies in multiple locations in real time. It is also possible to conduct feedback on the status to take the appropriate action at the appropriate time and to improve the accuracy of maintenance plans.
