Mitsubishi Electric has launched its new EM-A Series of salient-pole motors, a first in the industry, offering exceptional speed and position control without the need for encoders. Offering a competitively priced alternative to servo motors, the EM-A Series is to revolutionise applications that require positioning and/or accurate speed control, such as conveyor systems, assembly lines, inspection systems, or dosing pumps, to mention a few examples.
The EM-A Series motors are extremely compact, up to two frame sizes smaller than most induction motors, and meet the high-efficiency class IE5 standards. This results in a 50% reduction in energy losses compared to IE2 motors, providing a smaller overall footprint without compromising on performance. This makes the EM-A Series an ideal solution for facilities looking to maximise space utilisation while minimising energy costs.
Compatible with Mitsubishi Electric’s FR-A800 and FR-E800 inverters, the EM-A motors deliver precise point-to-point position control and accurate speed control, all without motor-mounted encoders. This design reduces wiring complexity and size while achieving a positioning accuracy of 200 pulses per revolution (p/rev) and a command resolution of 4096 pulses per revolution (p/rev).
The EM-A Series features sensor-less vector control, maintaining stable speed even during load changes, and a servo lock function that provides holding torque when the motor stops, preventing unwanted movement from external forces. With a speed variation rate of ±0.05% and a speed control range of 1:1300, these motors offer precision speed and positioning control comparable to servo motors with sizes from 0.1kW up to 7.5 kW. This robust performance ensures that operations are smooth and consistent, even under varying load conditions, making it ideal for critical tasks in production and inspection lines.
