Advantech Integrated Control Solution for Precise Adhesive Dispensing

Organisations use adhesive dispensing in electronics, lighting, automotive, power generation, and other industries. In fact, they are one of the most basic types of equipment found in product manufacturing.

Manufactured products requiring the application of industrial adhesives, paints, and other liquids, use high precision dispensers to accurately distribute the material in specific locations, typically as a point or in a line, circle, or arc.

Whereas large producers of dispenser technology enjoy a clear monopoly, smaller users can experience development costs. As a result, Advantech has worked with local smart equipment manufacturers to help them develop in-house solutions.

Adhesive Dispensing System

For example, one client’s dispensers had three servo motors and three stepper motors. This included an XYZ platform where the Z-axis is an XZ step ancillary module, and a step control feed axis where the key axis is geared to five other axes.

To accommodate different product heights, they used dislocation sensors to scan the nozzle height via laser to establish dual Z-axis control of the nozzle height. Of particular importance, the dispensing rate and movement speed had to be consistent, thus requiring automated comparative triggers for the adhesive dispensing valves.

To meet high-standard industry requirements in terms of precision and speed, particularly where products tend to be small, needs sufficient control to produce dispersion points as small as 0.15 mm in diameter, line application widths of 0.168 mm, and straight angle turn radius of 0.5 mm need application speeds of up to 200 mm/s.

System Description

The four-stage workflow of the high-speed, high-precision dual-channel adhesive dispenser comprises: Material loading, adhesive dispensing application, weighing, and completion. The material loading stage uses an Advantech USB-4716 analogue acquisition card and dislocation sensors for machine visual inspection. This also involves calculating the PCB angle and height of the workpiece. The Advantech PCI-1285 stepping controller card uses this data to adjust the adhesive dispensing valves.

At the dispensing stage, they apply adhesives to the target according to the programmed specifications. They use the same PCI-1285 to execute interpolation and various other functions aimed at axis control. At the weighing stage, the USB-4716 antilog USB module determines whether the amount of applied adhesive meets the specified amount. Finally, work pieces reach the product completion stage where they apply the appropriate amount of adhesive, completing the process.

Advantech’s role

Of particular benefit to the customer, the PCI-1285’s allows simplified system customisation and control of the dual-channel adhesive dispenser. Furthermore, the PCI-1761 digital input card and USB-4716 ensure the maintenance of the high-speed and high-precision operation. In addition, they allow future expansion while occupying minimal space.
